QFX files are used by Quicken Financial Exchange, a personal finance management software system developed by Intuit, Inc. Quicken is available for both Windows and Macintosh and uses these QFX files to store financial information such as transactions and balance sheets for transmission across the internet.
The QFX file format is actually a Quicken specific, proprietary implementation of the format known as Open Financial Exchange (OFX), developed by Intuit along with Microsoft and CheckFree in early 1997 as a data-stream format for exchanging financial data between businesses, consumers and financial organizations across the internet. Although the OFX format was actually developed in part by Intuit, the Quicken software made by them uses their own proprietary QFX format by default , although it can open OFX files as can many other financial packages such as Microsoft Money, GnuCash and Apple iWork '08 Numbers, among others. Most software that supports OFX files can also open QFX files, even including lesser known software such as Fund Manager from Beiley Software, Inc.
The internet features of Quicken Financial Exchange are accessed via the 'Web Connect' menu option, which enables QFX files to be downloaded from the internet and viewed.
QFX files are also used for fax images created by the Quick Link software, which in it's current version is used to send faxes from notebook computers over a mobile phone's data connection. There are lots of other third party applications available that can open Quick Link fax images and convert them to other image formats such as File extension TIF, File extension JPEG and File extension PNG for easier viewing in your favorite image viewer.
There are no known risks associated with either of these file formats; due to the nature of their contents, they are not executed and therefore cannot contain virus code. These files should be perfectly safe to open.
