MPG file extension is commonly associated with video and audio compressions MPEG-1 or MPEG-2. This is designed to compress audio and video to formats that can be downloaded. Movies with this extension are of lower sizes and greater quality, but quality differs from it original VCR videos. This file format can run on Mac, Windows and other portable devices.
Moving Pictures Experts Group (MPEG) created the standard including several compressions such as .m1v, .mp2, .mp3, .mpeg, and others. This compression can run encoded data up to 1.5 million bits per second (bps). MPG can recognize video format known to MPEG standards.
Files using extension .mpg or .mpeg used a combination of MPEG-1 for video encoding and MPEG-1 Layer II (also known as MP2) for audio encoding. There are also other MPEG-2 files that are using MPG extension that uses MPEG-2 encoded video.
Due to its portability, MPG files are usually incorporated with converting original license VCRs to downloadable movies. There have been issues that videos can be downloaded from illegal torrent files resulting to copyright issues.
You can open MPG files using applications such as Apple QuickTime Player, Microsoft Windows Media Player, Roxio Toast, CyberLink PowerDirector, CyberLink PowerDVD, and other movie players. This provides good quality audio at a higher bit rate.
