Canon digital cameras use a CTG file format and extension for their catalog index. It is created automatically, as soon as you start using the device, and contains information on the number of images stored in each folder on the camera's memory card.

CTG files serve as a marker for your computer, giving it information about the location of images contained in folders and some metadata about them, thus allowing the memory card to index existing images.

These files are generally limited to 99 files and are stored in the CANONMSC folder and referenced to other folders saved on the memory card.

CTG files are not intended or designed to be manipulated manually and by deleting the images, the CTG files will be deleted as well.

CTG files are not images and therefore cannot be converted to any other image format such as JPG or PNG, if you find a CTG file on your device do not try to open it manually.

How Can I Open CTG File on Windows

We researched and learned that the best way to open CTG file is to find a CTG file in question in Windows OS File Explorer and double click on it to launch the corresponding application.
If a CTG file is not opened in an application and you instead get a "Windows can't open a file" error message you should try looking for an application which can open the file in question.

We advies to open Files app on your iPhone or iPad device. You can find it by swiping down on the home screen and typing "Files" in the search bar.
Tap on the Downloads folder on the Files app home screen.
You will see all files that you recently downloaded. Tap on the CTG file to view it.
If you have the right app that can open it it will automatically launch and open your file.
