The WK4 format file is used primarily by IBM's Lotus 1-2-3 software.
This means that the WK4 format is a spreadsheet that stores data in cells arranged in rows and columns, and each cell contains static data or a formula, which automatically updates the value displayed in the cell.
IBM Lotus 1-2-3, was a spreadsheet program included with Lotus SmartSuite and developed by the American company Lotus Development Corporation, which was acquired by IBM in 1996 and, in fact, no longer exists under that name.
The WK4 format integrated the ability to work with graphics and perform elementary database operations, it had a table search function, similar to the implementation in Microsoft Excel.
Version 4 had inherited the use of macros from version 2, with syntax and functions similar in complexity to that of an advanced BASIC interpreter, which included handling of character string expressions.
Since the Excel 2007 version, it is no longer possible to import the WK4 format, as it is not supported, however, in previous versions of Excel it can be imported.
In any case, the spreadsheet program Gnumeric, belonging to the GNOME Office for Linux package, can open and edit WK4 files, and can also export them to the Excel XLS format.
