UPDATE is a file extension associated with ISAPI Update Format files.

ISAPI, which stands for Internet Server Application Program Interface, is a set of instructions associated with the Windows OS that enables you to write a web server application.

The UPDATE file contains the internals of an updated DLL for the web server, which is automatically recognized and updated by the ISAPI Loader.

How an UPDATE file works

When the ISAPI loader discovers a new UPDATE file, it terminates the current requests from the web server, bundles the new requests, changes the existing RUN file to use the BACKUP extension, renames the UPDATE file to RUN, reloads the new RUN file, and, then it resumes normal web server operations.
