The MCO extension file contains Flash-based animations, called Winks, that could be sent using Windows Live Messenger (formerly MSN Messenger).
It was an instant messaging client developed by Microsoft and integrated into the Windows operating system.
It connected to the Microsoft Messenger service and, in later versions, was compatible with Yahoo! Facebook messaging until its exit from the market in 2013.
MCO files are similar to sending an emoticon, but could be a much broader and more functional animation.
Winks saved in MCO files can be installed via Messenger Jump! MSN Winks Installer or MSN BackUp.
Windows Live Messenger was discontinued in 2013 and has been integrated into Skype.
The closest software that uses this type of technology (not in MCO files) is Telegram Messenger.
