File extension EMZ is used by Microsoft Windows to represent compressed Enhanced Metafiles (EMF). The File extension EMF file type is a type of image file containing a recorded sequence of Windows GDI (Graphics Device Interface) graphics functions and is the successor to the older File extension WMF (Windows Metafile) format. The GDI is a set of functions for Windows programmers that provides basic drawing functionality, and anything that can be drawn with the GDI functions can be saved to an EMF file with very little effort.
The most common applications for opening EMF and WMF files are the Windows Picture and Fax Viewer (installed with Windows XP and later) and Microsoft Office and Visio, although functions for handling these files are provided by the Windows programming API and so many, many third-party programs are able to read this format with no problems at all.
EMZ files are simply EMF files that have been compressed using the extremely common GZIP type compression and so they can simply be decompressed prior to viewing by any compression/archive software package with support for GZIP. For example, changing the extension to .File extension GZ will often enable you to use software such as WinZip or WinRar to extract the EMF files. Sometimes the files contained in the EMZ might have their extension truncated to EM upon extraction. In these cases, appending the missing F on to the file extension is all that is required to open the files.
Another, somewhat easier method, involves copying the EMF file to the clipboard and then pasting it into a Microsoft Word document which will display its content. The EMF file can then be saved out separately, either as an EMF file or as any other image format supported by Word.
